What is a B Corp?
In September 2018, after months of rigorous assessment, we proudly became the first recipe box in the UK to become certified as a B Corporation (a ‘Better Corporation’). For those new to B Corps, we wanted to highlight exactly what this means, as we think it is the future of doing business.
B Corporations are a global group of businesses (with just 188 in the UK!) who aim to use business as a force for good, balancing people and the planet with profit.
Myles recently attended the B-Corp #BInspired Day, to explore the role of business in society. He heard from business leaders, entrepreneurs, academics and activists, all with a shared purpose to find solutions to the problems people and the planet face. It was great to meet like-minded individuals and hear from businesses with similar values. Check out this short video of the day below.
But what exactly does this mean to Mindful Chef?
In 2019, the Mindful Chef Community funded over 1 million school meals for children living in poverty, through our charity partner One Feeds Two. We came together to clean 12,500 litres of plastic from UK beaches in our first ever #MCCoastClean and donated tens of thousands of items to UK foodbanks as part of our Reverse Advent Calendar.
We love that we can have a social impact outside of healthy eating, and that’s what being a B-Corp means to us. If you want to learn more, check out our 2019 Annual Sustainability Report.
We asked some friends in the B-Corp family to share what it means to them…
We became a B-corp last October. It’s a big commitment for a small business to make but one that I believe is fundamentally important to ensure that we as a brand remain relevant as well as crucially do all that we can to help fight the climate crisis that is upon us.

If you are a designer or a creator for a brand which is exploiting the planet, you are not a creator, you are a destructor. Being a B Corp encourages us to take a step back and see how we can incorporate circularity at every stage.

Our mission has always been to protect our planet, conserving vulnerable habitats and endangered species. The B Corp accreditation gives us a stamp of approval to prove that we’re serious about our purpose and impact. It demonstrates who we are, the values that we represent and the collective goals that we want to achieve. It also gives us an incredible framework and community to collaborate with, all of which are using business as a force for good.

As a B Corp, Toast Ale is part of a community of businesses that have committed to creating a better world. We’re passionate about saving the planet (over a pint), but we can’t do it alone. By collaborating with others we have a louder voice, a bigger stage, and more collective power to drive change for people and the planet.

At Ella’s Kitchen we are driven by our mission to improve children’s lives through developing healthy relationships with food and we do our best to be good to each other and good to the planet too. But for us, becoming a B Corp and joining the movement is super important because we believe it symbolises a new, better way of oing business. One which encourages community and working together to solve the world’s biggest challenges.

For me, being a B Corp is a commitment to #businessasaforceforgood. It means coming to work for an organisation and doing the best for the business whilst also making sure we’re thinking about the positive impact on the planet and the community. It means that my place of work is encouraging me to think about my world outside of the office, impacting my wellbeing and the choices I make. And it means I can share this passion with others and spread the idea that there are other ways of doing business, that business can be about more than profit, it can be about the triple bottom line of people, profit and planet.

Being a B Corp means the world to us at DAME, quite literally. Our planet is under immense pressure. We believe tackling social and environmental issues isn’t a choice for businesses anymore, it’s a must. Being a B Corp demonstrates to the world that we want to be part of the solution, not the problem, and sets the bar for how we grow as a sustainable, responsible business.

Being a B Corp means not just considering the impact we have as a business but finding ways to have a positive impact. Be it individually within our team, on those around us we interact with, and on the planet. Another huge part is being part of a community that help each other grow, and aligning with the movement towards what we hope all organisations will look like in the future.

For Neighbourly, certifying as a B Corp was about much more than reputation, it’s a profound statement of intent – showcasing our belief that business should be there to do some social good, that it’s not just all about the bottom line. Like an increasing number of people in business these days, we’re looking at what we can do as a company to actively make the world a better place, and the whole team is on board with this.

The minute I read the B Corp declaration I knew I had found my tribe, so certifying was a no brainer. B Corp values reflect everything I think business should be: mindful, inclusive, responsible. Certification is the best way to demonstrate that people and planet matter as much as profit and the B Impact Assessment is the best framework for measuring how we’re doing and where we can improve. We love it!
